Former India wicket-keeper batsmen Farokh Engineer recollected that MS Dhoni and last match debutant Rishabh Pant reminds him of younger days.

Meanwhile, Pant had a remarkable debut at Trent Bridge as India won the match by 203 runs to keep the series alive. He bagged seven catches including a fifer in the first innings and scored 26 runs with the bat. He looked ever confident with the bat smashing his second ball to a six of Adil Rashid.

Rishabh Pant replaced Dinesh Karthik at Trent Bridge, who went through a lean patch of form. He became the first Indian to grab five-catches in an innings on his Test debut. Pant’s brilliant work behind the stumps stood as one of the reasons behind India’s win in Nottingham. But Farokh Engineer reckons there are still areas of improvement in his techniques.

He gets up too soon. I was just discussing this with (Syed) Kirmani, who told me that this is the modern trend. I fail to understand why. Any good wicketkeeper would tell him not to do that because once you stay low, you can take diving catches on the leg-side but once you get up, you lose a fraction of a second, and you can’t get down (soon enough). This is why a lot of catches were falling short (in front of him) and in the slips. Otherwise, he’s good,” Engineer said to TOI.

Rishabh Pant has a bright future

Farokh Engineer also shared high praise for the 20-year-old Delhi cricketer. The former cricketer also revealed that just like MS Dhoni, Pant also reminds him of his younger days.

He showed immense promise. His reflexes are very good, especially the catch he took when the ball was still moving, and it really moves a lot in England, both in the air and off the pitch. (MS) Dhoni (former India skipper and wicketkeeper) reminded me of my younger days, and Pant also reminded me of my younger days. He has a bright future,” Farokh Engineer added.

India and England square against each other in the fourth Test at Southampton starting from August 30 (Thursday).
