England Call Up Joe Denly To Replace Injured Liam Dawson For Sri Lanka ODIs

England have called up Joe Denly for their rest of the ODI series in Sri Lanka to replace Liam Dawson who has returned home after suffering a side strain.

Dawson suffered the injury whilst bowling in the second match of the series in Dambulla on Saturday. The spinner is likely to remain on the sidelines for about a month. He was in the team for the first two games and was in contention to be picked up for the remaining three games too.

The series was a big opportunity for Dawson to bolster his reputation ahead of next year’s World Cup at home. A good outing on the spin-friendly pitches of Sri Lanka would have more or less cemented his spot as the third spinner behind Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali. And now Dawson’s unfortunate injury will give Denly an opportunity to make his presence felt.

“It’s a bit of a shame for Daws. When he looks like he is going to be a shoe-in for that third spinner’s role, he unfortunately gets a bit of a niggle,” said Chris Woakes. “He’ll be as frustrated as anyone. Hopefully, it is not too bad and he can play a part moving forward. He’s great to have around the squad, he’s been brilliant and he deserves his opportunities.”

Denly, meanwhile, will be looking to make an impressive comeback in international cricket. He played last of his nine ODIs way back in 2009. He is experiencing somewhat of a late career resurgence and would be keen to make the most of it. Recently, he made it to England’s Test squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

He had an impressive season for Kent. Consequently, he scooped the Vitality T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup Player of the Year awards. Denly was also voted the Professional Cricketers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year. He averaged 70 with the bat in the domestic one-dayers and took 14 wickets.
