What a knock it turned out to be from the India skipper Virat Kohli, as he stormed his way to 149 to resurrect India’s first innings at Edgbaston and set up the five-match Test series on a high.

It was a top class innings from the modern maestro. Despite getting dropped on two occasions, he stamped his authority on the English bowlers and played several excellent shots.

He took on the English bowlers single-handedly. His innings was the only reason that India fell 13 runs short of the England 1st innings total in the first Test match.

Former Indian legend and arguably the greatest batsman of all time, Sachin Tendulkar took to his Twitter handle and congratulated Kohli on a superb knock.

“A very important knock by @ImVkohli. Lovely way to set up the Test series. Congrats on your Test hundred. #ENGvIND,” Tendulkar tweeted.

The proceedings so far

Earlier in the day, England was bowled out for 287, as Mohammed Shami took the final wicket of the innings. The Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay began impressively.

Both looked in good touch and played some exceptional shots in the process. After a 50-run partnership between the duo, it was left-arm pacer Sam Curran who started the downward slide for India.

First, he dismissed Murali Vijay with an inswinging delivery. It wrapped on to his pads and would have crashed on to the leg stump. KL Rahul played a terrible shot and got dismissed on only his 2nd delivery.

Lastly, Shikhar Dhawan also fell to the ploy of Curran. It was a drivable length, and he fell into the trap. The slip cordon completed an easy catch in the end.

Virat Kohli from there on took the onus on himself to recover the Indian innings. Wickets kept falling around the India skipper, and he got dropped on a couple of occasions as well.

However, he kept going and eventually stroked his way to a breathtaking century which brought India back into the match. It was indeed a classic example of a captain’s knock.
