After a cut-throat series against the West Indies, England squared off against Ireland in the first limited-overs assignment of their home season on Thursday. The first of the three ODIs between the two sides looked like an entirely one-sided affair initially. Ireland found themselves at 28-5 in the seventh over before two half-century partnerships involving Curtis Campher saved face for them.

The Irishmen eventually finished with 172, giving their bowlers something to bowl at. When speaking of English bowlers, in the absence of Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, and Chris Woakes, the likes of David Willey, Saqib Mahmood, and Tom Curran took the mantle.

Willey bagged his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs while Mahmood and Curran shared three wickets between them.

In pursuit of 172, one would have thought that Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow would make quick work of the target. However, Bairstow perished within three overs Roy, James Vince, and Tom Banton departed too after playing some impressive shots. The hosts still needed 95, but they had plenty of overs and enough firepower in their repertoire.

And Sam Billings and captain Eoin Morgan were not in the mood to lose this game. Billings played some unorthodox as well as textbook shots with disdain while Morgan opened himself up gradually too. Billings finished off the proceedings with a maximum as the unbeaten partnership of 96 gave England a six-wicket win and a series lead.
