A group of 30 England Test players will begin training from next week (May 20). The first phase of training after the two-month gap due to Covid-19 will be based on individual training coupled up with a few practice session for the bowlers. According to reports, the centrally contracted Test players will undergo the first phase of training along with some special invitees from county cricket who focus on red-ball cricket.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), director of cricket, has confirmed that it is not an official squad but the board is preparing players before the season resumes. The ECB had earlier suspended competitive cricket till July 1, it is now likely that the sport in the country might get a green flag like the Premier League under strict measures.
Ashley Giles: We are going to be asking approximately 30 players to go back to training
“We are going to be asking approximately 30 players to go back to training,” Giles said. “We will need a larger group of players given we are planning for the strictest conditions, behind closed doors, to cover all aspects, whether that be injury, net bowlers, practice matches. The white-ball focused players will follow,” he added.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, after the bowlers have completed a two-week block, the batsmen and wicket-keepers will begin their training. Players will train individually on a staggered basis with a coach, a physio and a strength and conditioning coach where possible. The support staff will have a number of players to look after. ECB coaches and physios will be supplemented by a number of county staff which the ECB will fund.
The ECB are also optimistic about resuming cricket in the country with the three-Test series against the West Indies from July.
