England vs Australia 2020, 2nd T20I – Twitter Reactions
Published - 07 Sep 2020, 12:26 AM | Updated - 23 Aug 2024, 10:43 AM
England made short work of Australia’s total of 7-157 thanks to brilliant batting displays by Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan in the second T20I of the three-match series at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. The hosts have now taken an unassailable 2-0 lead against the No.1 ranked T20I side in the world as they condemned the Australians to their first T20I series defeat since October 2018.
Chasing 158, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler knew the importance of runs in the powerplay, which is exactly what they did, stroking some sumptuous strokes off Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins in the first 3 overs. But just as Bairstow was looking like getting back in form, he found the worst way to get himself out as he ended up smashing his stumps with the bat in an attempt to pull Starc.
This is the fifth time Mitchell Starc has ever bowled three overs in the Powerplay for Australia. Aggressive captaincy from Aaron Finch. #<!---->E<!---->N<!---->G<!---->v<!---->A<!---->U<!---->S

Mitchell Starc was at his hostile best in the powerplay as regularly tested England with short-pitch stuff. Malan and Jos Buttler, however, were equal to their task as they chipped in with crucial boundaries to ensure the scoreboard continued to tick over.
England scored 44 runs in the six-over powerplay but unlike Australia they ensured that they did not lose as many top-order wickets. England lost a flurry of wickets between the 6-11 over phase in the last game but that wasn’t the case today as Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler went about launching a calculated counter-attack on the spinners.
The duo racked up 61 runs in the next seven overs. Agar finally dismissed Dawid Malan in the 14th over but Buttler continued with his merry way, showcasing every single stroke in his repotire.

The swashbuckling opener brought up his 50 with audacious chip towards the cover region before rubbing more salt in Agar’s wounds by reverse-sweeping him. With a new batsman in at the crease, Aaron Finch turned to the pace of Mitchell Starc. Tom Banton missed out on yet another opportunity as he holed out in the deep to Ashton Agar.
Eoin Morgan kept up with poetic justice, giving an easy catch to Glenn Maxwell at short-cover to infuse some life back into the contest. With 18 runs required to win in the last 12 balls, Moeen Ali killed the contest by smoking Zampa for a six and four before Jos Buttler, fittingly, nailed the leggie with a massive six over his head to finish the game and the series with one more match to go.
Buttler seals the series win in style! ? #<!---->E<!---->N<!---->G<!---->v<!---->A<!---->U<!---->S p<!---->i<!---->c<!---->.<!---->t<!---->w<!---->i<!---->t<!---->t<!---->e<!---->r<!---->.<!---->c<!---->o<!---->m<!---->/<!---->o<!---->E<!---->L<!---->N<!---->b<!---->N<!---->V<!---->m<!---->7<!---->L

Australia were rocked early in their innings courtesy’s England’s pace duo of Archer and Wood
Earlier, Australian top-order were rocked by the precocious pace of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. Archer dismissed David Warner for his maiden duck in T20I cricket in the past 8 years in the very first over. Australia promoted Alex Carey ahead of Steve Smith but the move did not pay dividend as the southpaw was dismissed for a 7-ball 2 by Mark Wood.
Steve Smith looked in imperious touch in the 10 balls that he faced but his innings was cut short thanks to a brilliant run-out by Eoin Morgan. With Australia reeling at 3-39, England got a bit greedy as they went for a non-existent review of Aaron Finch after he defended a loopy leg-spinner from Adil Rashid on the front foot.
Finch survived and he, along with Marcus Stoinis (35) went about resurrecting the innings courtesy a 49-run stand. The partnership was eventually broken by Chris Jordan after Finch (40) chopped it on his stumps.
Marcus Stoinis followed suit, leaving the Aussies reeling at 5-89. The visitors, however, came back valiantly in the latter half of the innings thanks to handy contributions by Glenn Maxwell, Ashton Agar, and Pat Cummins. Australia scored 40 runs in their last 3 overs to take their total to 7-157 in 20 overs.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to England’s six-wicket win over Australia in the 2nd T20I-

Moeen is obviously better suited to the middle overs than the death overs but his presence in the death overs does have value in an age where teams increasingly hold an over of spin back for the death. It's like an inverse Narine – insulating pace hitters from spin. #<!---->E<!---->N<!---->G<!---->v<!---->A<!---->U<!---->S

Australia outside Australia since 2017 in t20Is (excluding vs Zim/UAE):
8 wins, 9 losses.
(1 win, 4 losses vs Pakistan)
A far more questionable number 1 than Pakistan ever were, but you won't hear their media/ex players talk about them so derisively…
