England fast bowlers mercilessly rattled India to beat them by an innings and 156 runs at the Lord’s Cricket Ground to go 2-0 up in the five-match Test series.

Meanwhile, Chris Woakes, who replaced Ben Stokes, was the star of the one-sided show. His all-round performance with both and ball got him the man of the match award.

Woakes bagged four wickets in total including the prized wicket of India skipper Virat Kohli in the first innings. He then came and scored 137* runs to bring his maiden Test century, to put England on the driver’s seat. However, James Anderson contributed equally returning with nine wickets in all.

However, it was the same old story for the Indian batters in seaming wickets. They once again struggled to put in an improved effort, as they suffered another humiliating defeat. Ravichandran Ashwin was the highest scorer for India in both the innings which shows sign how much the top-order needs to improve.

The visitors have used two different opening combinations; however, both have struggled which had halted their chances. They need to sort things ahead of the third Test in an attempt to save the series.

Here are the statistical highlights of day four of the second Test between India and England:

  • Chris Woakes (137*) now has the highest score for England batting at No. 7 or below against India. Previously, it was Jack Russell, who scored 124 against India in 1996 at Lord’s.

  • England all-rounder Chris Woakes brought his 1000 Test runs during his knock of unbeaten 137.

  • With the wicket of Murali Vijay, James Anderson now has 100 wickets at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Muttiah Muralitharan (166) tops the list of bowlers with most wickets at a single venue.

  • India had suffered an innings defeat in five of their last nine Test matches in England.

  • India had failed to score 200 in seven out of their last eight innings in England. Their average total in the last eight Test innings is only 160.
