England vs India 2018, 3rd ODI – Statistical Highlights

Riding on a brilliant all round performance, England thrashed India by 8 wickets in the third ODI to seal the three-match series 2-1.

Asked to bat first, India could only manage 256 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs. Virat Kohli waged a lone battle scoring a fighting 71. However, none of the other batsmen could put up a good fight. David Willey and Rashid Khan starred with the ball, picking up three wickets apiece.

In reply, England chased down the total in less than 45 overs to chase down the total at a loss of just two wickets. Joe Root (100*) and Eoin Morgan (88*) stitched together an unbeaten partnership of 186 runs to take England over the line with utmost ease.

With the game now done and dusted, here is a look at some interesting numbers and statistics from it:

1. Joe Root became the third England player to score more than one century in a three-match ODI series. The other two players to achieve this feat are Graham Gooch and Nick Knight.

2. This was India’s first  bilateral ODI series defeat under Virat Kohli’s leadership. Kohli led India to eight consecutive series wins. The defeat also ended India’s 9-series winning run. India’s last bilateral ODI series defeat came at the start of 2016 in Australia.

3.  This series was England’s first series win in five bilateral ODI series against India since winning the 5-match series at home in 2011. Since then, India defeated England at home 5-0 in 2011, 3-2 in 2013 and 2-1 in 2017. They also defeated England in England by 3-1 in 2014. This was also the 5th consecutive ODI win for England in Leeds.

4. This was also the 8th consecutive bilateral ODI series win (More than one game) for England since losing 2-1 to India at the start of 2017.

5. Root now holds the record for most number of centuries in ODI format for England. He surpassed Marcus Trescothick’s tally of 12 ODI tons which he equalled in the last match.

6. The unbeaten 186-run stand between Root and Morgan is England’s highest partnership for any wicket in ODI cricket against India. Their previous highest partnership against India was 185 between Nasser Hussain and Marcus Trescothick in the 2002 NatWest Final.

7. Both Virat Kohli and Eoin Morgan completed 3000 runs as captain in the ODIs during this match. Kohli reached the feat in a record 49 innings while Morgan took 80 innings for the same.
