Moeen Ali bagged a five-wicket haul as England fought their way back into the game but an excellent hundred from Cheteshwar Pujara ensured India to retain the upper hand on day two of the fourth Test at Southampton.

Meanwhile, Pujara was the mainstay during India’s reply and batted brilliantly to bring his first century in England. However, the hosts fought back well with the ball in the afternoon and evening sessions.

Stuart Broad provided the early setback removing both the openers early in the morning session. Virat Kohli then partnered Pujara to revive the innings adding 92 runs either side of the lunch. The downside for India started when Kohli edged one of Sam Curran to Alastair Cook at first slip at Southampton.

It was then a one-man show from Moeen Ali while Pujara fought it out from the other end. India were reeling 227 for 9 still 19 runs behind India’s modest total of 246. Pujara, who played a slow inning for much of the day, started to break free capitalising on every opportunity to score runs.

After going to a century hitting Moeen over his head, he batted for over an hour with Jasprit Bumrah – who was eventually out for 6 caught at slip off Broad – to give India a lead of 27. As a result, the England openers Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings had 11 minutes to survive. They were upto their task, finishing the day at 6 for no loss.

Here are the statistical highlights from day two of the fourth Test between England and India at Southampton:
