The former Australia opening batsman, Chris Rogers has praised Team India skipper Virat Kohli for relying on his defensive skills to bail out against the danger of the moving ball.

Kohli’s defensive approach leaves Rogers impressed

As Kohli was trying to extend his tenure at the crease relying on his defence, Rogers texted one of his young students he coaches in the National Performance Squad (NPS). He asked him what he will do when the ball is doing so much that there is no possibility of scoring.

However, Rogers has been part of Australia’s playing XI in 25 Tests. He has been a coach in the National Performance Squad for a long time. Also, he has been encouraging the NPS players to think of their practical experiences. Rogers also has also asked them to open their minds and should have different ways and methods to succeed in the game.

Rogers has earlier seen David Warner being unable to put the bat on the ball from very close quarters. A batsman like Warner is always a threat to the oppositions.

So it shows you have to respect the bowlers when the conditions are in favour of them. However, Warner was well aware of the fact that the only solution to that problem was a sound defence.

Chris Rogers says what Virat Kohli exactly did in Edgbaston

In the opening Test, Kohli scored a magnificent 149. However, he was troubled quite a bit outside the off stump. He didn’t have enough opportunities to bat on the ball.

However, he used the method of defence, and it did come to his rescue. After getting set Kohli toyed with the English bowlers and eventually got dismissed on 149.

“Watching Kohli in that first Test, he was almost rendered shot-less, because the ball was doing so much,” he explains to cricket.com.au. “It wasn’t that he wasn’t trying to score – and this is arguably the best player in the world – it was that it was almost impossible to score because the ball was doing too much.

“It’s in those times that relying on your defence is quite possibly your best option.

“There will often be times in a Test match when that happens, and if you don’t have a defence, it’s really difficult to get through because you can’t just hit your way out of every situation.

“And if you’re a T20 player, I’d argue that defence is not a skill you’re focusing on too much,” Chris Rogers said.
