The hosts England came back from 1-0 down to level the series beating India by five wickets while chasing a modest total of 149 runs at the Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on July 6 (Friday).
Meanwhile, the English bowlers put in a much-improved performance sending India’s top-order back to the hut in no time. England bowlers used the conditions to full effect as they reduced the visitors to 22 for 3.
However, some gritty performance from the middle-order ensured the Indians put something for the bowlers. Skipper Virat Kohli partnered Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni to take his team out of trouble. Kohli added 47 runs while Raina and Dhoni contributed with 27 and 32* as India posted 148 at the end of 20 overs.
The host’s bowlers were right on the money with almost everybody making a mark.
In reply, meanwhile, Umesh Yadav drew early blood removing both their openers cheaply. Yuzevndra Chahal joined the party to cut short England’s innings to 44 for 3 at the end of seven overs. With their top three batsmen already in the dressing room, the hosts were in a spot of bother.
Since then, Alex Hales partnered skipper Eoin Morgan to rebuild the innings. The pair added 48 runs before Hardik Pandya struck to remove the English skipper. However, a crucial stand between Hales and Jonny Bairstow shifted the momentum before Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Bairstow (28).
With 12 runs needed off the last over, Hales (58*) struck the first two balls for a six and a four to seal the game for England.
