England is considered as one of the strongest outfits in colored clothing went into the match as the favorite and had control on the match for the majority of the match.

However, a lower order flourish from the Kiwi tail-enders took the match away from the tourists.

However, a positive for England in the first ODI was the return of all-rounder Ben Stokes. Stokes played his first international match since he was arrested outside a Bristol nightclub five months ago.

Stokes had a memorable return to international cricket, especially with the ball as he picked up two wickets in his second spell and got England back in the match.

However, this late burst was not enough for the tourists as the Mitchell Santner took the match away from them.

The loss has left England, captain, Eoin Morgan frustrated as he expressed his disappointment after the loss.

Morgan said:

“When you lose, it’s always frustrating … but there are big positives to take,”

However, Morgan also expressed his delight over Stokes’ return to action for the national side:

“I thought he adapted to conditions perfectly well, using slower balls well.”

“He’s delighted to be back – he’s told everybody that. It’s an awesome feeling, when you’ve been away and you’re back in a fun environment, with lots of good friends around. I can vouch for that. I spend a lot of time away while the Tests are on. You come back, and it puts a smile on your face.”

Morgan also spoke about giving Stokes a second spell which tilted the match towards England for a brief period:

“After the first spell, he said he could have bowled longer, but we didn’t really need him at that stage. We needed something to happen, and he’s the kind of player who can make something happen.”
