South Africa’s skipper Faf du Plessis has shared his disappointment after his gun fast Duanne Olivier signed a Kolpak deal. Olivier who had a fine start to his Test career signed a Kolpak deal with Yorkshire Cricket County club. The lanky fast bowler had a great start to his red ball version career and Faf du Plessis shared his disappointment on the timing of the deal.

Olivier had a sublime three-match Test series against Pakistan where he had breathed down the neck of the visitors. The gun fast bowler had scalped 23 wickets in the three matches as he bowled with an average of 14.

Faf was not aware of the deal.

Similarly, Faf du Plessis gave the example of Kyle Abbott who had also signed a Kolpak deal when he was going strong at the International level. The Proteas skipper said he cares about the players in his team. Faf also said that Duanne didn’t discuss his signing with the team.

“It’s the timing that disappoints me the most. It reminds me of Kyle Abbott matter some two to three years ago. I care for the players so when you see them earn their spot in the team‚ you want them to run with it for a while and get the best out of themselves from an international perspective because I want guys to be the best they can be from an international view.

The legacy that you leave is your international career and I see a lot of value in that. I’m very disappointed that Duanne didn’t live out the expectation I had in regards to him but I’ve spoken to him about it and his decisions are similar to those of Kyle. What unfolded for Duanne during the summer was great but without us knowing‚ he was halfway committed to a different future and security of being in a long-term deal.”

Duanne Olivier scalped 48 wickets in 10 Test matches at a sublime average of 19.25. After signing the Kolpak deal, Duanne Olivier will not feature for South Africa. Olivier became the 14th active Kolpak player and joined the likes of Rilee Rossouw, Simon Harmer, Kyle Abbott, and others.
