2020 did not start on a good note for Virat Kohli and his teammates as the first T20I between India and Sri Lanka in Guwahati was abandoned without a ball being bowled. Even before the start of the match, there were apprehensions over it because of the protests in the city following the parliamentary approval to India’s Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Last month, the final day’s play between Assam and Services in the Ranji Trophy was called off because of a state-wide curfew. But fortunately, things became normal and both the teams landed in Guwahati. The stage was set for a bumper clash as fans arrived in huge numbers to see a rare international game in the city.
But on Sunday, rain god played a cruel game with the fans and the teams as the game was washed out. At first, it looked like the game would go ahead after the toss took place as per the schedule. But just moments before Virat Kohli and his men could take the field, rain arrived.
The showers lasted less than an hour and the ground staff immediately covered the pitch – and the bowlers’ run-ups. However, it did not stop the water from falling onto the pitch. The ground staff then resorted to various measures, ranging from using hair-dryers to steam irons, in order to dry the wet patches near the middle of the pitch, but to no avail.
And almost three hours after the game was about to start, the umpires called off the game. Both the teams will now move to Indore for the second T20I on January 7 and then Pune for the third and final game on January 10.
Virat Kohli memes:
Apart from the ground staff and the fans, Virat Kohli was also desperate for the game to start. The India skipper was seen inspecting the pitches and one of the moments during that inspection saw him become a meme material on Twitter.
Virat Kohli was seen sitting on his knees and checking the pitch and the fans came up with hilarious memes on it.
