Covid-19 Impact: Feroz Shah Kotla Ground Becomes Home To Migrant Workers

Never in the past was Feroz Shah Kotla ground used to accommodate migrant workers not even during partition. Now in a novel coronavirus pandemic situation, the Feroz Shah Kotla ground is being used to accommodate migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh (UP), Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Bihar.

In the past three days, the premises of Feroz Shah Kotla has been used as home to the migrant workers. Additionally the workers are also being duly tested to ensure health and safety among their fellow beings. In the national capital, at least 10,000 positive cases have been reported so far. Out of which, the deadly virus has caused death to 168 people as per the latest count.

Feroz Shah Kotla home to 2000-2500 migrants on Tuesday

As per a report in Hindustan Times, Feroz Shah Kotla was home to at least 2500 migrants on Tuesday. DDCA joint secretary Rajan Manchanda asserted that there could be more migrant workers coming in the next few days. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority has reportedly made all the arrangement for the migrant workers.

“We have been told that there could be more labour that will housed here in the coming days,” DDCA joint secretary Rajan Manchanda was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

“We were given a notice of 15 minutes by the Delhi government and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority the day before. They brought in beds, everything. They were being brought in twice a day. On the first day, we got 10 buses, carrying 500 people in the morning. Again, 10 more came in the evening, returning with the first one. Our entire staff was put on duty – electricians, plumbers etc,” he added.

The DDCA had already said that they are ready to give their premises to the government in the pandemic situation. They have also pledged to donate Rs 5 lakh to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund as well as R11 lakh to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
