Former South Africa Coach Russell Domingo Interviewed By BCB For Head Coach Job

Former South Africa coach Russell Domingo is in line to be next Bangladesh’s coach. Multiple reports suggest that he was interviewed by BCB for the post today and the board is expected to take a call on its new coach soon. Domingo coached South Africa from 2012 to 2017.

After being replaced by Ottis Gibson post the away series against England, Domingo coached South Africa A and presently holds the position. He is expected to tour to India later this month but he will leave the job if BCB confirms him as new head coach before the start South Africa A tour of India.

Bangladesh had sacked head coach Steve Rhodes and other members of support staff following Bangladesh’s poor form in World Cup 2019. The Mashrafe Mortaza-led side finished at the eighth spot in the points table with three wins and five defeats, failing to qualify for the next round.

Rhodes’ contract was to end in June 2020 but it came to a premature end due to Bangladesh’s poor performance in the World Cup 2019. The team continued poor run following the tournament and lost the three-match ODI series to Sri Lanka by a margin of 0-3.

If the announcement isn’t made, Domingo could also take over as South Africa’s head coach for the India tour. Cricket South Africa had sacked Gibson and his support staff recently. The board is not expected to name a new head coach prior to the India tour.

The other two candidates for Bangladesh’s top job are not known but Domingo, given his credentials, looks one of the favourites for the post. South Africa qualified for the semi-final of World Cup 2015 and also defeated Australia in Australia in a three-match Test series next year under the tutelage of Domingo.

If appointed, he will team up with former South Africa bowling coach Charl Langeveldt. He (Langeveldt) was recently appointed as pace bowling coach of Bangladesh. BCB had also named for New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori as the spin bowling coach.
