Former India opener Gautam Gambhir could take over as the next president of Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). The association, which is in turmoil once again, is likely to elect its next President by January 13 and if all goes as per plan, Gautam Gambhir could be asked to succeed Rajat Sharma as the head.

DDCA’s image was further tarnished on Sunday when the office-bearers threw punch over each other during the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The video of the horrific incident has gone viral and a number of former cricketers including Gautam Gambhir lashed out at the members. Gautam Gambhir, in fact, went on to request BCCI President Sourav Ganguly to take action and dissolve the association.

Now only time will tell what’s in the store for DDCA but Gautam Gambhir could be seen given the responsibility to bring the house in control. ADDCA official said that the legendary batsman  has been approached and the experience that Gambhir has had as a captain and a former international player should help get DDCA back on track.

“He has shown what he brings to the table and was instrumental in changing the fortunes of KKR. Not to forget, his contribution to Delhi cricket.  With the likes of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly impressing with his leadership qualities as an administrator, Gambhir could be the perfect person to take over the reins of DDCA at this point in time.

“Some BJP officials have in recent times, in fact, also gotten in touch with him to understand what all has been happening at the association; and after yesterday, it would only be ideal that a strict taskmaster like him (Gambhir) takes over and gets the association back on track. Yes, he has shown interest in the talks we have had so far and another meeting is expected to take place with him in the New Year,” the official told IANS.

Gautam Gambhir retired as one of India’s greatest openers. He was the ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2009 and was the top-scorer in the final of 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 50-over World Cup. He also made his mark in the IPL by leading Kolkata Knight Riders to two titles.
