Towards the end of the historic day-night Test between India and Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar had caught everyone’s attention with his comments for Virat Kohli. The legendary captain had made sure to express his displeasure after Kohli stated at the presentation ceremony that Sourav Ganguly’s team started the winning culture in Indian cricket.

While Kohli’s comments for local boy Ganguly drew applause from all around at the Eden Gardens, Sunil Gavaskar was not at all impressed with it. The ex-cricketer-turned-captain was quick to remind Kohli that cricket existed in India even before Ganguly became the captain. Gavaskar went as far as saying that Kohli perhaps made the comment to please the BCCI president.

“This is a fantastic win but I would like to make a point. The Indian captain said that this thing started in 2000 with Dada’s team. I know Dada is the BCCI president, so maybe he wanted to say nice things about Dada. But India was also winning in 1970s and 1980s. He wasn’t born then,” Sunil Gavaskar said on air.

“A lot of people still think that cricket started in only in 2000s. But the Indian team won in 1970s overseas. Indian team won in 1986 overseas. Indian team drew series overseas. They lost like other teams did,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir reacts to Gavaskar’s comments:

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, meanwhile, has reacted to the comments from Gavaskar. And the legendary batsman has interestingly said that Kohli was right with his assessment. While Gambhir said that Gavaskar and other captains before Ganguly used to win in Tests, they did mostly in India. Gambhir insisted that the culture of winning abroad came only after Ganguly took over.

“That is Virat Kohli’s personal thinking,”Gautam Gambhir told Sports Tak when asked about current India captain’s statement. ” There is no doubt we started winning outside India more under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy.”

“Under previous captains like Sunil Gavaskar or Kapil Dev or other captain after them, India were always a dominant force at home. However, under Ganguly, we started winning more outside India. I think what Virat Kohli said about taking Sourav Ganguly’s legacy forward, in terms of winning outside India, I agree with it,” he added.
