Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has set some lofty targets for Rohit Sharma in Test cricket. The India star has already established himself as an ODI and T20I great but he is yet to prove himself in the longest format of the game. But his Test career finally seems to be back on track.
After being in and out of the Test team for years, Rohit Sharma was finally promoted as an opener last year and he made an instant mark. He was promoted during the home series against South Africa and he made sure to make the chance count.
In his first Test as opener, he scored a century in both the innings before scoring a double century in the same series. Unfortunately, he missed the two games in New Zealand earlier this year due to a calf injury as India lost both the games. He is likely to be seen in action in Tests next when India tour Australia later this year.
And as Rohit Sharma aims to do well in Tests too, Gautam Gambhir believes the right-handed batsman has a lot more to do if he is to match the accomplishments of the legendary Virender Sehwag as an opener in Test cricket. Just like Rohit, Sehwag had also started his career as a middle-order batsman before being promoted as an opener.
“He is a fabulous white-ball cricketer, probably a better record than anyone of us including Virender Sehwag. But Test cricket is a completely different ball game,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected Show.
“Yes, I could see the brilliance of it but let’s see where his cricket goes because Virender Sehwag has got two triple-hundreds. So, I hope Rohit Sharma can be as successful as Virender Sehwag in Test cricket,” he added.
Rohit holds the record for the highest score in ODIs. Incidentally, he broke Sehwag’s record to achieve the feat when he played the monumental knock of 264 in 2014. So far, he is the only batsman to have scored more than one double century in ODIs and has scored as many as three. He is also the only batsman to score four centuries in T20Is.
