Gautam Gambhir might be roped in as a mentor for KKR for the forthcoming IPL season.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), chasing a mammoth total in Sharjah, lost the match against Delhi Capitals by 18 runs on Saturday. KKR captain Dinesh Karthik was in the thick of things for some poor decision making. Fans on social media also called out the KKR management to replace Dinesh Karthik with Eoin Morgan as the captain for the side.

Gautam Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL triumphs as captain, was also unhappy with certain decisions that Dinesh Karthik took in the match. Gambhir slammed Karthik for giving the penultimate over to Varun Chakravarthy. The spinner gave away 20 runs in the over after being economical in the first fee matches for the side.

Your best bowlers need to ball the 18th, 19th and 20th over: Dinesh Karthik

“Your best bowlers need to ball the 18th, 19th and 20th over, unfortunately it didn’t happen. Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine — if a spinner has to bowl. Even Mavi, he did a fabulous job in the previous games and so did Andre Russell. You have to got to give your best bowlers,” Gambhir said on ESPNCricinfo chat show.

“Yes, Varun Chakravarty did bowl well in the first few overs but you cannot expect a young spinner to be bowling the 19th over and that too in Sharjah, probably it was a miscalculation,” he added.

Gambhir was one of the most sought after Indian players when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought him in 2011 and handed him the reigns of the side. Gambhir not only brought out the best from his players but also helped the franchise clinch success in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

KKR have also opted for a balanced side than a star-studded line-up. But their initial success came in the year 2012 after they clinched the IPL trophy. The franchise was looked as one of the most consistent as they clinched their second title in 2014 under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir.

Gambhir was a part of the KKR franchise till 2017.
