KL Rahul will be donning the captain’s hat for the first time in IPL. He will be leading the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) franchise in the upcoming season and there will be plenty of expectations from the Indian opener. More so, because KL Rahul has done well for KXIP in the recent past and has turned out to be a vital cog for the franchise.
Former India opener Gautam Gambhir is excited with the prospect of KL Rahul. He has said that he genuinely wants to watch KL Rahul perform in IPL 2020 as he thinks the opener is more of a white-ball cricketer and not a Test player.
“I would want to genuinely watch what KL Rahul does in this IPL,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports Connected.
“Because according to me KL Rahul is a fantastic T20 cricketer, probably not Test cricket, but definitely T20 and white-ball cricketer.”
KL Rahul is also in the reckoning to become the first choice wicket-keeper for India after MS Dhoni called time on his international career. Rishabh Pant was touted to fill in the big boots of MS Dhoni across format. But as he failed to capitalise on the chances he was given with his poor shot selection and questionable glovework, it opened the doors for KL Rahul.
The Karnataka batsman, on the contrary, latched on to the opportunity and made the most of it. KL Rahul was tried to bat at different positions for Team India and he delivered. His glovework was also neat which came as an added bonus for the wicket-keeper batsman.
KL Rahul averages 45.65 in the shortest format.
