Thanks Canada, Says David Warner as his Journey in Global T20 Canada Comes to an End
David Warner thanked the organisers of Global T20 Canada, and the fans after his journey in the inaugural edition of the tournament came to an end on Sunday.
Warner returned to competitive cricket through the recently-concluded tournament in Canada. Before that, he had not played since the ball-tampering scandal against South Africa in March.
In the aftermath of the scandal, Cricket Australia (CA) had slapped lengthy bans on Warner, Steven Smith and Cameron Bancroft. While Smith and Warner received a one-year ban each, Bancroft received a nine-month suspension.
However, CA had made it clear the forbidden trio would be allowed to play grade cricket. As a result, Smith and Warner got picked in the players’ draft for the competition.
Warner plied his trade for Winnipeg Hawks. During the tournament, he was also made the captain after Dwayne Bravo pulled out of the competition. Warner, however, could not take his team all the way in the six-team tournament.
The Hawks lost to eventual winners Vancouver Knights by 13-run win via DLS Method in the Qualifier 2. Chasing 154, the Hawks were reeling at 84 for five before bad light stopped play. The absence of floodlights, and with rain resuming, the game was eventually called off with the Hawks being 13 short of the par score.
After the game ended, Warner took to Instagram to thank the organisers and the fans for their support, writing,
“I had an amazing time in Toronto, thanks to every single person that was involved. @gt20canada Credit to you for putting together this tournament for what was only a thought about 8 months ago and you did it. Everyone I spoke to, took pics with and engaged with thanks you for being polite and so kind towards me. I really appreciated the opportunity to be back on the park and playing competitive cricket again. My team mates and staff were fantastic. Energetic and enthusiastic bunch of people, I am gonna miss you all. Thanks, Canada ?? until next time…”
