Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly turned 47 on Monday. The legendary batsman and captain is one of the greatest cricketers to have played for India. He started his Test career with a bang, scoring a brilliant century at the iconic Lord’s against England in 1996. There was no looking back since then as he created his own legacy as a batsman and a captain.

Ganguly soon established himself in both Tests, and ODIs. Less than four years after his Test debut, Ganguly was made the skipper of the side in the wake of the infamous match-fixing scandal. He went on to become the country’s most successful leader before MS Dhoni bettered his record.

It was Ganguly who had led India to the famous as well as the miraculous come-from-behind triumph against the all-conquering Australians in 2001. A couple of years later, his 144-run knock in Brisbane had set the tone for India’s 1-1 series draw Down Under. Ganguly will always be remembered for his immense role in making the team believe it can win overseas and the team did.

Under him, India registered a berth in the final of a Knockout tournament in 2000 and had won the same event a couple of years later. In 2003, the Ganguly-led team made it to the final of the World Cup. He also led India to a historic Test series victory in Pakistan in 2004. What made Ganguly even a better captain was the way he led the team from the front.

The southpaw ended his career with 7213 runs in 113 Tests and 11,363 runs in ODIs from 311 matches. He called it a day after the 2-0 win against Australia at home the following year in 2008. Unsurprisingly, he is being bombarded with messages from all around as he celebrates his birthday.

But once again Virender Sehwag has stole the limelight with his birthday wish for his former skipper. Sehwag’s birthday wishes are very popular among the fans and it is safe to say that he lived up to the expectation once again. The former India opener loves to play with words and on Ganguly’s birthday, he did the same. Sehwag took to Twitter to wish Ganguly, writing:

“Happy Birthday to a 56” Captain , Dada @SGanguly99 ! 56 inch chest, 8th day of the 7th month, 8*7 = 56 and a World Cup average of 56.  #HappyBirthdayDada , May God Bless You !”
