Haris Rauf is the latest sensation from the bowling factory of Pakistan. The right-handed bolter rose to fame courtesy his exploits for the Melbourne Stars in the 2019-20 season of the Big Bash League.

The right-hander came in as a last-minute replacement for injured fast bowler Dale Steyn and immediately turned heads courtesy his searing pace and penchant for bowing bouncers. Haris finished with 20 scalps for the Glenn Maxwell-led Melbourne Stars and was immediately rewarded with a call-up to the national side for the series against Bangladesh.

If the T20 World Cup goes ahead as per schedule, Haris experience of bowling in Australian conditions could hold him and Pakistan in good stead but the right-hander feels bowling to the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be his greatest challenge.

“This being a World Cup competition, the quality of opposition will be very tough as top players from each country will be playing in it so all batsmen will be difficult to bowl to. But looking at the top T20I players in the world, to be the greatest challenge will come from the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma,” Haris Rauf was quoted as saying by a Pakistan media channel

He added: “To do well against such top-quality batsmen will do wonders for my confidence and to be honest, based on my experience in BBL, I should be able to do well in the World Cup if given a chance. It is my nature that I don’t let any batsman dominate me,”

India and Pakistan is always a high-profile encounter; one that brings with itself a lot of added pressure but Rauf asserted that pressure situations tend to bring the best out of him.

“It’s a given that any Pakistan versus India game comes with its own special pressure and tension. The pressure is equally high on both sides with supporters of each side wanting to win at all costs. For me, any game such as the one between Pakistan and India, which has more pressure in it brings out the best in me,” Haris Rauf concluded.

That said, the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Australia from October 15, is itself in jeopardy thanks to the onslaught of COVID-19. But if it indeed goes ahead, it will be interesting to see how Haris Rauf fares against Virat and Rohit.
