Former India captain, Kapil Dev tracks back in time when he proposed to Romi Bhatia for marriage. The Haryana cricketer is often said to have given Indian cricket an identity on the international stage.
Though he retired from international cricket in 1994, Kapil Dev is still regarded as the greatest pace bowling all-rounder India ever had. He led the country to its maiden World Cup title in 1983 by beating a formidable West Indies side at the Lord’s cricket ground. Kapil Dev’s contribution to Indian cricket is immeasurable. Before MS Dhoni, he was an inspiration to small-town boys who dream of playing for the country.

Kapil Dev indirectly proposed to Romi Bhatia
Kapil Dev while chatting with Bollywood actress, Neha Dhupia on her chatshow revealed how he proposed to Romi Bhatia. On the show #NoFilterNeha Season 5, Dev said he and Romi were travelling in a car while they crossed an advertisement hoarding which featured the all-rounder.
In the advertisement, Kapil had butter on two of his teeth which were visibly outside, and then he asked Romi to click a picture. When she questioned the reason for it, Kapil answered that they would show the photo to their children. Romi realised quickly that in an indirect and funny way, Kapil was proposing to her.
The 61-year-old remembers that while Romi’s father agreed for the marriage soon, it was her grandfather who grilled the cricketer with a series of questions. Kapil and Romi got married in 1980. They gave birth to a daughter, Amiya Dev in 1996.

The movie titled ’83’ on Kapil Dev’s life is in the making. Ranveer Singh is starring as the Indian captain, and his wife Deepika Padukone will play the role of Kapil’s wife, Romi.
