"I Promise I Didn't Know" - Ahmed Shehzad Opens Up On His Dropped Catch Appeal During ODI Against Sri Lanka

Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzad finally broke his silence on the dropped catch appeal during the ODI against Sri Lanka in 2015. He said his eyes were closed and he didn’t know if the catch was taken.

Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad has always been the centre of attraction for his on-field antics against Sri Lanka in the fourth game of the series in 2015. The opening batter while fielding dropped a catch in the game and was very confident that he pouched it.

Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Thirimanne tried to dispatch the ball for a boundary on the leg side. But Ahmed Shehzad, who was fielding in the deep, came in as an obstacle. He tried to catch the ball but made a mess of it. The ball hit the ground but he claimed that the ball didn’t touch the ground and was stuck between his biceps and forearm.

On checking the replay of the same, it showed that the ball had hit the ground and the third umpire immediately declared that not out. The incident is still fresh in the minds of many fans, who still take a jibe at Ahmed Shehzad for the same.

Ahmed Shehzad talked about the catch and admitted that it was an error of judgment on his side. He said that he was very confident that the ball stuck between his elbows as his eyes were closed.

Speaking to Nadir Ali’s podcast, he explained: “It was an error of judgment from my side. I thought the catch was taken. I was quite confident that the ball got stuck here (shows elbow) and it was there throughout.

“If you watch that video from the start, the impact came here (shows elbow again). My eyes were closed, and you don’t really know if the catch has been taken.”

Ahmed Shehzad further went on to say that he didn’t appeal for a false catch and he wouldn’t even think of it because, with cameras all around, there was no fun of it. He elaborated:

“No, no, I promise I didn’t know. It is not possible that you know it is not out and still you would appeal with 180 cameras watching. You cannot just sneak away like that in front of the camera. Errors are a different thing, but you cannot sneak away with a false catch.”

Ahmed Shehzad has been amongst the finest batters for Pakistan. He has scored 2605 runs in ODIs along with 982 runs in Tests and 1471 runs in T20Is.
