Former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman and current cricket commentator, Ian Smith has lauded former Indian skipper, MS Dhoni. Dhoni, who has been away from international cricket for a while now, is gearing up for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Indian National Cricket Team has not been able to fill the void left by Dhoni, especially, in the limited-overs cricket. Dhoni played his last game in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 where the Men in Blue perished in front of the Kiwis.

Talking about the Kiwis, India is currently playing New Zealand in a two-match Test series. The hosts have already won the first game by a hefty margin of 10 wickets. Prior to the Test series, India and New Zealand faced each other in a five-match T20 series and a three-match ODI series.

Both the teams had contrasting fortunes as India clean swept the Kiwis in the T20Is and New Zealand clean swept the Men in Blue in the ODIs.

India missed the tactical masterclass of Dhoni in the ODIs and once again, they were exposed in the middle order.

Ian Smith Lavishes Praise On MS Dhoni:

Speaking on the eve of the second Test between India and New Zealand in Christchurch, Smith said, “How can you not miss MS Dhoni on a cricket field? He has been a great leader and a great finisher. He almost won you the World Cup [2019] semi-final. I admire him and love talking about him, but time moves on and at some stage you have to accept that new generation will get a chance.”

Dhoni’s absence has seen the former captain indulge in various other sporting activities and spend time with his family to keep himself fresh and away from international cricket.

Dhoni is soon expected to start training for the Men in Yellow at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai ahead of IPL 2020 opener between CSK and defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in Mumbai on March 29.
