ICC Brings New Change To Penalty Rules For Slow-Over Rates

Apart from bringing a new rule of substitutes for the concussed players, the International Cricket Council also made a key change to counter slow-over rates. From now, it is not only the skipper of the team but also all the players in the playing XI will have to bear the punishment for the slow-over rates.

Earlier, it used to be only on the captains if there was a slow-over rate in the game. The captain of the respective team used to get the penalty points and also finds himself in a sight of bothering by nearing towards the match suspension.
No Suspension for the captains – ICC
However, the latest rule is something, which brings a smile on the face of the skippers across the globe. They have lifted the rule of suspending the skipper and also introduced a change in law citing that every player on the field will bear equal punishment alongside the captain.

1. Captains will no longer be suspended for repeated or serious over-rate breaches.
2. All players should be held equally responsible for slow over rates, and as such will be fined at the same level as the captain.
3. In World Test Championship matches a team that is behind the required over-rate at the end of a match will have two competition points deducted for each over it is behind.

Well, this would certainly help the game of cricket, as all the players in the team will carry a responsibility on their shoulders to finish the game. With ICC T20I World Cup set to arrive in a few months, the introduction of the new rule would certainly help.

Further, the ICC confirmed the Cricket Committee recommendation that there should be further exploration of the use of replays to call No balls. Regarding the same, the trials will be conducted over the coming months.
