ICC Cricket World Cup: Total Number Of Sixes Hit In Each Edition Of The Tournament

There is little denying the fact that fans across the world just adore watching sixes. Players flexing their muscles and clearing the boundary ropes is one of the best spectacles on the cricket field. Gone are those days when sixes were nothing less than a luxury on the field. However, things have changed now.

The modern bats, fielding restrictions and the fearlessness of the batsmen have made it pretty easier for the men with the willow to make lives difficult for the bowlers. So as the 2019 World Cup goes on, we take a look at just how many sixes were being hit in each edition of the Word Cup.

ICC Cricket World Cup 1975: 28 sixes

England hosted the inaugural Cricket World Cup in 1975 where West Indies won that tournament. While a total of eight teams participated in that tournament, the total number of matches played in that tournament was 15. In that tournament, a total of 28 sixes had been hit (per match sixes = 1.87).

Once again England hosted the 1979 Cricket World Cup, and West Indies retained their World Cup trophy. In that tournament, the total number of teams was eight, and the total number of matches played was 14. Once again the total number of sixes in that tournament was 28 (per match sixes = 2.00).

ICC Cricket World Cup 1983: 77 sixes

Once again eight teams participated in the 1983 Cricket World Cup that was organised by England and Wales. Though West Indies reached their third consecutive World Cup final, India beat them by 43 runs in that final and secured their maiden World Cup trophy. Batsmen hit a total of 77 sixes in 27 matches of this tournament (per match sixes = 2.85)

ICC Cricket World Cup 1987: 126 sixes

India and Pakistan organised in 1987 Cricket World Cup, and Australia won that tournament. The total number of teams (eight) and matches in that tournament (27) remained the same as the previous edition. In that tournament, the batsmen smashed 126 sixes (per match sixes = 4.66)

ICC Cricket World Cup 1992: 93 sixes

Pakistan won the 1992 Cricket World Cup that was organised by Australia and New Zealand. It was a very colourful tournament where nine members participated in that tournament, and the total match number was 39. At the end of that tournament, the total number of sixes was 93 (per match sixes = 2.38).

ICC Cricket World Cup 1996: 148 sixes

Asian countries India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan organised the 1996 Cricket World Cup. Sri Lanka created history in that tournament by winning that trophy. In that tournament, 12 teams participated, and the total match of that tournament was 36. Batsmen hit 148 sixes in that tournament (per match sixes = 4.11).

ICC Cricket World Cup 1999: 153 sixes

England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands organised the ICC Cricket World Cup 1999. Australia won that tournament at the end as it was their second World Cup trophy. After all the 42 matches of that 12-team tournament, the batsmen hit a total of 153 sixes (per match sixes = 3.64).

ICC Cricket World Cup 2003: 266 sixes

South Africa officially organised the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 along with Zimbabwe and Kenya where Australia retained their CWC trophy after finishing as the unbeaten champions. That 14-team tournament had 52 matches, where we saw a total of 266 sixes (per match sixes = 5.11).

ICC Cricket World Cup 2007: 373 sixes

West Indies hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 where 16 teams fought to win that tournament. After 51 matches of that tournament, Australia once again won that tournament without losing a game. That tournament observed a total of 373 sixes (per match sixes = 7.31).

India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh organised the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, while ICC later cancelled Pakistan as the host nation in the wake of 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team in Lahore. Fourteen teams featured in that tournament and the total match number was 49. At the end of that tournament, the total number of sixes was 258 (per match sixes = 5.26).

ICC Cricket World Cup 2015: 463 sixes

Australia and New Zealand jointly hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 where Australia regained that CWC trophy. Fourteen teams participated in that tournament while the match number of that tournament was 48. We observed a total of whopping 463 sixes in that tournament (per match sixes = 9.64).

ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: 353 sixes

England and Wales are hosting the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019. A total of ten top teams are fighting to win this competition. After the first 47 matches of this tournament, batsmen have slammed 353 sixes (per match sixes = 7.51).
