The proliferation of the global pandemic that is the coronavirus has put the entire world of sports on the backburner. From La Liga, Premier League, Olympics to Wimbledon, every major sporting event has been cancelled in the wake of the rising pandemic.

As far as cricket is concerned, the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League has been postponed for an indefinite period of time. Initially, the cash-rich league, which was scheduled to take place from March 29th, was postponed till April 15. But with the situation not really improving, the tournament has now been postponed until further notice.

ICC Will Give Preference To IPL More Than T20 World Cup Or Asia Cup: Basit Ali

Since the postponement, there have been speculations that the BCCI is looking at a September-October window. Former Pakistan batsman Basit Ali has now reckoned that the International Cricket Council (ICC) will give preference to the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the ICC T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Australia from October 15.

“Indian board generates 70 per cent revenue for ICC and everyone knows that. Whatever the Indian board will say is going to happen,” said Basit Ali as quoted by cricketpakistan.com.pk.

Ali further said that whether it is the Asia Cup or the T20 World Cup, the IPL will triumph over both, should there be a clash of events. Basit Ali added that if the cash-rich league does not take place in India, it will be moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“Be it the Asia Cup or the T20 World Cup, IPL will be given preference, in case there is a clash, over both of these events. If IPL does not take place in India, then it’s going to be moved to Emirates [UAE],” he added.

Earlier Caribbean Premier League head Pete Russell had said that they will not compete with the BCCI, while further adding that he hopes that IPL works out an alternative window for itself.

However, the BCCI have categorically denied the speculations of them mulling over an alternate window for the 13th edition, saying that the current situation thanks to COVID-19, isn’t ideal to think too far ahead.
