ICC World Cup 2019: Twitter Reacts As England Obliterates Afghanistan
Updated - 19 Jun 2019, 02:42 PM
England proved to be too strong for depleted Afghanistan as the former had a clinical win of 150 runs in the 24th match of the ICC World Cup. The hosts posted a huge score of 397 runs after Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to bat first on the featherbed of Old Trafford, Manchester.
England got off to a decent start as their opener added 44 runs before James Vince who replaced Jason Roy was dismissed after scoring 26 runs. However, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root continued to impress with their panache shots. Both the right-handers timed the ball with perfection and the Afghanistan bowlers no answers to the class of Root and Bairstow.
England comes up with a clinical performance.
Bairstow scored a good knock of 90 runs but he was denied a hundred when Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib took a sharp caught and bowled. Root kept going strong and scored 88 runs. On the other hand, England skipper Eoin Morgan found the middle of the bat from ball one he faced.
Morgan completed his fifty off just 36 balls but a bigger thunder was about to blow away Afghanistan. The left-hander catapulted his attack on the opposition and took the bowlers to the cleaners. Morgan completed his hundred off 57 balls – which was the fourth fastest of the World Cup.
The southpaw batsman hammered 17 sixes in his knock of 148 runs from 71 balls. Thus, Morgan made the record of most sixes in an ODI inning going past Rohit Sharma, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle.
Rashid Khan had a horrible day at the office as the best T20 spinner was taken for 110 runs in nine overs – the third most expensive figures.
On the other hand, Afghanistan had a mountain to climb and they never looked like getting to the top of it. Afghanistan scored at the end of their 50 overs after a contribution of 76 runs from Hashmatullah Shahidi.
Here is how Twitter reacted:
Afghanistan may have had a near impossible chase but remember, they also needed to convince themselves that they can keep a good bowling side in the field for 50 overs. #WorkInProgress

Rashid Khan's worst day:
– conceded the most sixes by a bowler in an ODI (11)
– first spinner to concede 100+ runs in an ODI
– most runs conceded in a WC game
– 7 sixes to Morgan, most by a batsman v a bowler in an ODI#EngvAfg #CWC19— Bharath Seervi (@SeerviBharath) June 18, 2019
Good effort this from AFG, they were struggling to look confident about their batting. This is their best score in World Cups. So only improving

What on earth is the pitch made of? There should be a balanced competition between the bat and the ball. You feel sad when the balance is disturbed. #RASHIDKHAN’s bowling stats in the match is a shocker! #ENGvAFG #CWC19

Do as I do and not as I say. Morgan is leading this dangerous batting pack by example. Most dangerous batting line-up in the #CWC19. Especially while batting first. #EngvAfg

Hang on, Rashid Khan is in sight of the most expensive bowling figures in odi cricket. Who would have thought!

17 sixes with a bad back. Eoin Morgan coming to the party for England as well. Afghanistan still not just able to adjust to the conditions #ENGvAFG

This is such a flat deck. #ENGvAFG

Has Rashid Khan been below par in this tournament or have batsmen from across teams started reading him better?
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) June 18, 2019
#EoinMorgan has hit 22 sixes in #CWC19 so far – he equals the previous record for most sixes hit by an England team in a single edition of the World Cup (2007).#ENGvAFG
