ICC World Cup 2019: Twitter Reacts As India Gets Over Gutsy Afghanistan By A Whisker
Updated - 23 Jun 2019, 07:24 PM
India defeated Afghanistan by the skin of their teeth in the nail-biter contest. Men in Blue was restricted to a below par score of 224 runs after the Afghanistan spinners breathed down the neck of batsmen. The Men in Blue could not get off to a good start after skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. The man in form Rohit Sharma was dismissed early when he could not read the carrom ball from Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Subsequently, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul added a partnership of 57 runs for the second wicket. However, when Rahul was looking good, the right-hander made the mistake of going for the reverse sweep. But he got a top edge to Harzratullah Zazai who was stationed at short third man.
India gets over the line.
Vijay Shankar had a golden opportunity to get a big score under his belt but the right-hander could not grab it. Shankar scored 29 runs but he was dismissed by part-timer Rahmat Shah.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli continued his good form going as he scored his third fifty on the bounce. Kohli rotated the strike at regular interval but didn’t get the support from the other end. Mohammad Nabi got one to jump off from the length and Kohli could not keep his shot on the ground. Kohli was dismissed after 67 and India’s innings looked in trouble.
Kedar Jadhav scored a good knock of 52 runs. On the other hand, MS Dhoni failed to rotate the strike against the spinners. Thus, India failed to get the finishing touches.
Afghanistan could not get to an ideal start to their run-chase as they lost the wicket of Hazratullah Zazai. The southpaw was cleaned up by Mohammad Shami when the fast bowler came to bowl from round the wicket. Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah provided the stability to Afghanistan’s innings as they added 44 runs for the second wicket.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match:
I don't think anyone thought, I certainly didn't, that Afghanistan would run this game so close. Tilted India's way but this game has made a lot of predictions look silly……

Hardik Pandya has put in a serious shift today. Clever pace and just held his line together after the initial two overs were taken for runs. It's a credit to him that Kedar Jadhav has not been used at all. #IndvAFG #CWC19

Asking run rate may be mounting but as long as AFG have wickets in hand, India under serious threat

It's getting as intense as ever. Credit goes to Afghanistan for giving a scare to world-class unit. Mohammad Nabi has played a gusty knock to keep Afghan's hopes alive. But in the end brave Bumrah has bowled a brilliant over to make a difference after Shami conceded a single…
