Sri Lanka scored 135 runs after New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bowl first at the green top in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff against Sri Lanka in the third match of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. Sri Lanka could not get off to a good start when Lahiru Thirimanne was plumbed in front by Matt Henry on the second ball of the day. Ian Gould gave the decision in favour of the batting side but the third umpire had to reverse the decision after Kane Williamson decided to send it upstairs.

Kusal Perera and Sri Lanka’s rookie skipper Dimuth Karunaratne added 42 runs with the former playing the aggressive role. Perera played some hard hits through the off-side. However, the southpaw was playing with fire and he was caught by Colin de Grandhomme when he top-edged against Kane Williamson.

New Zealand bowlers were right on the money.
Subsequently, Kusal Mendis was dismissed for a golden duck when he was caught brilliantly by Martin Guptill and Matt Henry was on a hat-trick. Sri Lanka’s innings kept on to landslide as Dananjaya de Silva was plumbed in front by Lockie Fergusson.
Former skipper Angelo Matthews could not even get off to a mark before he was taken edged off to Tom Latham against Colin de Grandhomme. Moreover, Jeevan Mendis was caught nicely by James Neesham when he closed the bat face too soon than he should have against Lockie Fergusson. Thus, the Kiwis bowlers made most of the conditions on offer and breathed down the neck of the Sri Lankan batters.

Thisara Perera started his like Thisara Perera and catapulted his attack from the get-go. On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s captain Dimuth Karunaratne helplessly saw the wickets fell like match sticks from the other end.

Here is how Twitter reacted to Sri Lanka’s batting innings:
Another disappointing batting day at the World Cup. Expect batting sides to be a bit more conservative up front from here on.

So apparently it’s a sporty wicket bringing the bowlers .. I mean seamers in to it . Would be keen to see if England play on such pitches especially against teams with good pace attacks #cwc19 #SLvsNZ

If SL wants to make it a T20 and finish early to have afternoon nap, then they need to stop playing sensibly and go for blinders, just like my boys did yesterday. #NZvSL #SLvsNZ #CWC19

Surprised to see the most accomplished Sri Lankan batsman, Angelo Mathews, going further down the order
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) June 1, 2019
It is happening way too often now. We have to address the issue of the ball hitting the stumps but the bails staying put.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) June 1, 2019
Sri Lanka are reeling and ICC are making plans of having just four teams in the next World Cup *grin*.

Is there any stat engine to tell us about how many times Kusal Perera has been compared with Sanath Jayasuriya? #CWC19

These Zing bails are causing a fair amount of grief. Heavier and deeper grooves to accommodate them. @ICC will have to re-consider its utility. Attractive can’t be at the cost being unfair to the bowlers. #CWC19 #NZvSL
