India’s southpaw batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. Dhawan had suffered a blow to the left hand in the second match against Australia on 9th June. Thus, the left-hander had a fractured thumb and it was expected that he would recuperate within three weeks time.

However, it wasn’t to be as Board of Control for Cricket in India has confirmed that Dhawan has been ruled out of the entire tournament. Dhawan had scored a fine knock of 117 runs off just 109 balls against Australia. But Dhawan was injured in the same match when he was hit on the hand by Pat Cummins. Dhawan scored 125 runs in the two innings he played in the tournament.

Huge blow for India.

Consequently, it is a big blow for the Indian team as Shikhar Dhawan has been a consistent performer in the major events of the ICC. Dhawan was the golden bat holder for the Champions Trophy edition of 2013 and 2017. Furthermore, he was India’s leading run-getter in the 2015 World Cup edition. Hence, it is a big disappointment for India as well as Shikhar Dhawan.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant was called in as a cover for the southpaw batsman. Consequently, the left-hander will replace Shikhar Dhawan. Pant has impressed with his pyrotechnics and it would be interesting to note whether he would get his chance in the playing XI.

Dhawan has a great record in ICC events.

On the other hand, India has got off to a good start in the tournament. The Indian team has won three out of their four matches and they look set to qualify for the semifinal stage.

In fact, Men in Blue have savoured success against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan whereas their match against New Zealand was called off due to rain. India will next play Afghanistan at Rose Bowl, Southampton on 22nd June.
