India have made a thumping start to their ICC World Cup 2019 campaign winning the first four of the five games while one was a washout. However, the last match against Afghanistan and the ongoing match against West Indies have once again raised doubts once thier middle order batsmen. Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has slammed the batters for giving the bowlers a chance to dominate the middle overs.

India managed to score only 90 odd runs in the last 20 overs against the minnow Afghanistan after a good opening start provided by skipper Virat Kohli. MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav failed to take on the spinners who dominated almost to take the game away.  MS Dhoni and Jadhav were part of a 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket, but they also played out 84 balls between themselves. Dhoni made 24 off 36 in that partnership while Jadhav scored 31 off 48 balls which slowed down India’s proceedings in the middle overs. Rashid Khan who got hit in the initial overs came back to slow the run-rate and thus restricting India to a small total.

Things turned out in the same manner against West Indies as the middle overs fetched runs at a rate of below 5. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul gave India a flying start but once they were gone, runs dried up. Fabien Allen, who gave away 34 runs in his first five overs returned to give only 18 in his next five helping West Indies restrict the run flow. The batsmen, especially MS Dhoni, failed to take him on, which helped West Indies restrict India to 268 runs.

Virender Sehwag took a dig at the Indian batsmen who failed to capitalise on the spinners in the middle overs. He also said that the batters can’t be defensive against the spinners.

“Rashid Khan had gone for 25 in 4 overs , gave away only 13 in his next 6 and today Fabian Allen had given 34 in 5 overs, only 18 in next 5. Can’t be so defensive against the spinners,” Sehwag tweeted.
