India suffered their first defeat of the ICC World Cup 2019 when they went down against England by 31 runs at Edgbaston in Birmingham. England’s victory have almost spoiled Pakistan’s party of making it to the semifinals of this World Cup. MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav’s lack of intent during the chase attracted a lot of criticism, and former Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis takes an indirect dig at Dhoni following India’s defeat.

Batting first, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow’s 160-run partnership helped England propelled to 300+ score. Although India made a comeback banking a five-wicket haul from Mohammed Shami, Ben Stokes played a blinder to take the score to a mammoth total. Stokes’ 54-ball 79-run knock before an outstanding century from Bairstow almost took the game away from India.

India made the worst start to the run chase losing KL Rahul early. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma started the revival but found it hard to get going against some top-class bowling from English seamers. Despite that, they found the boundaries from here and there and reached their fifty-run mark. Kohli departed soon leaving India in trouble which brought debutant Rishabh Pant in the crease. Rohit showed through his third century of the World Cup, but the flow was never there before getting out. The young guns – Hardik Pandya and Pant showed some intent of chasing the target, but once they were out, it was all over for India. MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav showed no intention of chasing down the target and focused on taking singles. The duo didn’t even attempt to play the big shots which took everyone by surprise as India went down by 31 runs.

The former India skipper was at the heart of the critics, and Waqar Younis was an addition to the lost list. He slammed MS Dhoni with a cryptic message saying that sportsmanship of few cricketers were put into the test last night and they failed badly. Dhoni remained unbeaten 42 runs off just 31 balls including four boundaries and one six. In the last five overs, India could fetch only three boundaries and one six out of which the six and a four came in the last over itself.

“It’s not who you are.. What you do in life defines who you are.. Me not bothered if Pakistan gets to the semis or not but one thing is for sure.. Sportsmanship of few Champions got tested and they failed badly #INDvsEND #CWC2019,” Waqar tweeted.
