India’s seven-match winning run in the ICC World Test Championship came to an end on Monday with a heavy 10-wicket defeat at the hands of New Zealand. With the loss, India dropped their first points in the World Test Championship while New Zealand gained their first point since August last year.
Resuming on 144/4, and trailing by 39 runs, India failed to deliver with the bat again and were all out for just 191 to give New Zealand a target of only 9 runs. Overnight batsmen Ajinkya Rahane departed in the third over of the day while Hanuma Vihari fell in the next over which sealed India’s fate.
Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma added 27 runs for the eighth wicket which helped India avoid an innings defeat. Tim Southee finished with figures of 5 for 61 while Trent Boult also impressed, taking 4/39.
With nine runs needed for victory, Tom Latham and Tom Blundell took only 10 balls to ease past the target, and secure New Zealand’s 100th Test win.
