Australia cricketer Moises Henriques talked about the newly formed Major League Cricket (MLC). He said that the standard of the tournament has caught him by surprise and the quality of the players and grounds will help attract local talent to the sport in the USA.
The USA-based Major League Cricket has taken many by storm. The inaugural edition of the tournament kickstarted last week and so far the tournament has got a great response from the public in America. Many big names are part of the tournament and it’s fair to say that cricket is only going to grow in America.

Major League Cricket will see 19 games being played among six teams in MI New York, Texas Super Kings, Los Angeles Knight Riders, Seattle Orcas, San Francisco Unicorns and Washington Freedom. The fact that owners of IPL franchises have acquired teams here as well makes the league a brand in itself.
Moises Henriques, who is captain of Washington Freedom, talked about his team combination and said that the tournament success will be measured in coming years as currently, many players have migrated. He explained:

“I think I might be the Jordan Silk to (NZ batter) Glenn Phillips, he’s going to be the guy smacking it and I’ll be the guy coming in behind him either to fix the ship or continue on the back of his coat tails.
“I was extremely surprised with how high quality the domestic players are, but I think at this stage, a lot of those players have only recently moved to the US from other cricket-playing nations. I think where we will measure this tournament’s success will be hopefully in years to come we’ll have domestic players with American accents.”

Moises Henriques further went on to say that MLC 2023 will peak when domestic players will rise up the ranks. He also talked about the pitches in Dallas, saying that it’s a great opportunity for cricket here. He explained:
“I think that will be the real feather in the cap when those domestic players have been here for a long time. Who knows, maybe in 10 or 15 years’ time we’re going to hear a captain in the IPL with an American accent rather than six captains in the US league with foreign accents.
“(Dallas) is a brand new square … I can’t say definitely how the pitches are going to play, but they look great. It looks like there’s going to be a lot of runs – I think from what I’ve seen of the facilities so far it’s going to be a really good broadcast product, so it’s a pretty amazing opportunity for cricket here.”
Moises Henriques’ Washington Freedom lost their first game by 6 runs. The all-rounder scored 21 runs with the bat and also picked one wicket with the ball.
