Team India paid a hefty price for their poor slip fielding the last time they toured England in 2014, and the first day of this Test series has already shown indications that this will be no different.

India rode on its premier off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin to crawl back into the game. He returned with four for 60 to send almost half of the batters back into the hut.

Ashwin removed Alastair Cook to with an unplayable delivery dragging him to reach the ball.

However, England started off well and dominated the morning session. Despite Cook departing cheaply, skipper Joe Root and Keaton Jennings steadied the English innings. They added 72 runs for the second wicket before Jenning departed in an unlucky fashion. Dawid Malan followed shortly after, but since then, Jonny Bairstow and Root looked in absolute control of the proceedings.

They played according to the merit of the delivery, cashing in on the loose ones. In the process, Root brought his half-century, his 12th consecutive fifties against India in Tests. When he looked well in line for another hundred, Virat Kohli’s stole the wicket a moment of brilliance.

Ashwin returned to removed Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, who looked in good touch and were settling in.

Mohammed Shami also chipped in two wickets, as he looked in good rhythm. It will be a huge boost for the Indian side on this long tour. Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav also chipped in with one wicket each.

Dinesh Karthik drops one

Despite a brilliant display of bowling, India gave away two chances to prolong England’s innings. The fielding worry continues, and this time it was the wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik.

It was the last over the day when Mohammed Shami came steaming in and bowled a ripper of a delivery. It was a full-pitched delivery swinging away and drawing the batsmen right in front.

It took the faintest of the edge, and Shikhar Dhawan was sitting well at the first slip to grab it.

However, Karthik tried to intercept it jumping one-handed to his left side only to drop it and extend England’s innings to the next day.
