India skipper Virat Kohli will have a chance to add yet another feather to his captaincy hat in the upcoming three-Test series against Sri Lanka. In just two years of his captaincy, Kohli has exceeded all the expectations, transforming the team into a world beater which is ruling Test cricket.
Kohli too the reigns of the team from Dhoni towards the end of 2014 when India had lost another overseas Test series and their talismanic skipper Dhoni had brought down curtains on his career midway through the series against Australia. Kohli, however, did not take long to make an impression. In his first Test series as full time skipper, he led India to 2-1 series win in Sri Lanka which was their first Test series win in the island nation after 22 years.
The series win was followed by an impressing 3-0 win over South Africa at home before the team proved its worth in the mammoth 2016-17 season where they defeated West Indies (2-0), New Zealand (3-0), England (4-0), Bangladesh (1-0) and Australia (2-1). The winning streak continued in Sri Lanka too as they thrashed the Islanders 3-0.
Well, Kohli is now just 3 Test wins away from becoming the second most successful Indian skipper, leaving behind the legendary Sourav Ganguly. A 3-0 whitewash will help Kohli to leapfrog Ganguly who led India to 21 Test wins in 49 games.
On the other hand, Kohli has registered 19 Test wins as captain in just 29 Tests and a 3-0 whitewash will help him surpass Ganguly. The list is headed by Dhoni who led India to 27 victories. With Team India being in top form and Sri Lanka struggling to put up good performances this year, Kohli will be backing himself to surpass Ganguly.
Meanwhile, Kohli also holds the record of leading India to most consecutive Test series wins which is 8. Only Australia and England have more consecutive Test series wins (9) and Kohli will be eyeing to equal that record too.
The three-Test series against Sri Lanka will get underway on November 16 at the Eden Gardens.
