Australia are considering radical plans to make sure their home Test series against India towards the end of this year goes ahead as scheduled. Australia’s next home season’s packed schedule is under significant threat from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Australia have imposed strict restrictions to restrict the spread of the epidemic which is causing headaches at Cricket Australia. Due to the restrictions, the Australia-India series is in doubt, which if cancelled could cost Cricket Australia up to $300 million in lost TV revenue.

However, the cricket board is considering plans to ensure the series can go ahead if government restrictions on foreign arrivals are restricted, or if India’s touring party can receive an exemption.Cricket Australia has been offered the use of Adelaide Oval’s new luxurious $42 million hotel as a base for the Indian side during their coronavirus quarantine period, according to a Sydney Morning Herald report.

The head of the South Australia Cricket Association, Keith Bradshaw, told Fairfax he had offered the use of the new Oval Hotel to Cricket Australia in a bold plan to make sure that the series against India goes ahead. Kangaroo Island and Rottnest Island had also been touted as possible locations for the touring side to see out their isolation upon arrival. As per the existing rules, the players would have to stay 14 days in quarantine.

The Oval Hotel – set to open in September – would allow the Indian team to train at the oval and world-class nets nearby while in quarantine. After that 14 day period ends, the Adelaide Oval could be reopened to the public to host a match. The report suggested that the Indian team could play a warm-up game.

In case the series goes ahead as planned, India would be looking to retain the Border-Gavaskar series. The Virat Kohli-led side had created history on the last tour by winning the series 2-1. It was India’s first-ever Test series win on the Australian soil.
