Former Indian opening batsman Aakash Chopra has tipped Shubman Gill as the next big thing in Indian cricket. Shubman Gill has already played a couple of ODIs but could not make a mark in those limited opportunities. However, his domestic record is impressive, which flags that he deserves an extended run.
Shubman Gill made his international debut in India’s limited-overs tour of New Zealand in 2019. However, he could manage only nine runs across two matches and was not seen in the national colours again. When looked at Gill’s domestic record, he averages a mammoth 73 in first-class and a healthy 45.60 in List A cricket.
Aakash Chopra confidently stated that India must invest in Shubman Gill. Aakash felt that he missed the bus in the opportunity he received. He further pointed out that the 20-year old came in the side at the expense of Virat Kohli, looked promising but could not solidify his spot.
“India should invest and we will do. I feel that he missed the bus in the one opportunity he got. When Virat Kohli was not there and he was played, he batted in New Zealand and looked promising but couldn’t cement his place,” Chopra stated on his Youtube channel.
Shubhman Gill should get more chances: Aakash Chopra
The 42-year-old went on to mention that the Punjab batsman has not got enough chances so far and must have a few more. At the same time, Aakash opines that Shubman Gill must cash on it, given the quality of batsmen that already exists in the domestic circuit. Hence, he would have to grab those opportunities otherwise it would be tough.
“No doubt, he has not got too many opportunities. He should get more chances. But when you see this Indian team’s batting order at the position he bats, you feel that he will get very few chances. So you have to grab them, if you miss that then it would be difficult. That’s exactly what has happened with Shubman Gill,” the cricketer-turned-commentator conceded.
Nevertheless, Aakash Chopra is confident that the upcoming decade will be of Shubman Gill and that he would rule everyone’s hearts with his performances.
“Unfortunately he didn’t get too many opportunites. But the upcoming time is his. In the 2020s, the coming decade, Shubman Gill will win everyone’s hearts. We all feel like that, including me. His time will definitely come,” he added further.
