Team India have decided to send back two net bowlers – Avesh Khan and Deepak Chahar – back to home. But before returning to home, both Chahar and Avesh made the headlines for unwanted reasons. Team India had sent these two bowlers for a media interaction and the miffed journalists had declined to attend the same since neither of the two are members of the World Cup squad.

The press-conference, however, was not an official one and perhaps this made the team send the two net bowlers. According to ICC rules for tournaments like the World Cup and Champions Trophy, it’s mandatory for teams to send a representative — preferably the captain — to face the media a day before every match and after the match. On other days, it’s up to the team to decide whether they want to send someone or not.

Later, India’s media manager defended the decision, saying that the team thought the media persons would be interested to know about the two players’ experience with the squad

“Avesh and Chahar will be returning to India. Khaleel will remain with the team. Because these two are going back, we thought of bringing them to the press conference,” said the media manager of the Indian team. “We thought the media might be interested in listening to their experience of being with the squad.”

India, meanwhile, will be opening their campaign against South Africa on June 5. The Men in Blue will be the favourites for the clash. The two-time winners enter the contest on the back of a thumping 95-run win over Bangladesh in the warm-up clash. On the other hand, South Africa have lost both of their opening two games. They lost their first game by 104 runs against England before Bangladesh stunned them by 21 runs.
