The recent turn of events seem to indicate that it is end of the road for Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir as far as their international careers are concerned. While Gambhir, who made a comeback to the Test team for a brief period of time last year,  has not played limited-overs cricket for India since 2013, Yuvraj’s fairy tale comeback in the limited-overs team has ended as of now. Yuvraj returned to the ODI team earlier this year after a three-year absence and although he impressed in his comeback series, he failed to replicate his performances in the games that followed and has consequently been dropped from the team.

But while recent signs are suggesting that the duo is completely out of the frame at the time being, there is a slight possibility that they might return to the team for the last two ODIs against Australia and the subsequent three-match T20I series.

The reasons which can see them making a sensational comeback are:

Ongoing Duleep Trophy and the upcoming series against New Zealand A:

With 45 of the country’s best cricketers busy playing in the ongoing Duleep Trophy, the BCCI will have to look for other options when it announce the squad for the last two ODIs and the T20Is. Moreover, with several players set to play for India A against New Zealand A, the selectors will find it extremely tough to avoid Yuvraj and Gambhir.

Both the players have not been included in any of the teams:

Neither Yuvraj nor Gambhir has been included in any of the three teams of the Duleep Trophy or in the India A squad. And with majority of the players already committed to other assignments, the duo can be considered by the selectors.

With Australia being such a tough opposition, the selectors will definitely want to inject some experience in the team if Virat Kohli & Co. fail to impress in the first three ODIs and in such a case there are very few players who are as experienced as Yuvraj and Gambhir.
