Just a day before the first of the three-match T20I series against India, Windies have suffered another injury blow. Their star allrounder Andre Russell has been ruled out of the entire series due to an injury.

Russell was initially named in Windies’ 15-man squad for the three-match series. However, he was yet to join the squad on the eve of the first game. While the reigning World T20 champions sweated it out at the Eden Gardens on Saturday (November 3), Russell was nowhere to be seen.

Later, Cricket Windies released a statement, confirming the injury. Windies Chairman of Selectors, Courtney Browne stated that Russell was “injured at this time.”

Russell had played for Nangarhar Leopards in the Afghanistan Premier League game on Octoberr 9, a day before Windies announced the limited-overs squad for the India tour. Russell could not make it to the ODI side but was named in the T20I squad. At that time, Windies had stated that Russell missed out on the ODI team due to an injury. A couple of days later, Russell had taken to Instagram to confirm that he was returning home from APL to nurse a knee injury.

The latest injury will be another setback for Windies who are already missing several players. The likes of Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree are not in the squad due to various reasons. They have also lost off-spinner Ashley Nurse with an injury. Nurse had sustained the injury during the fourth ODI and missed the fifth game.

Well, Windies will be hoping that they continue to dominate India in T20Is. The two-time WorldT20 winners have a five-two record from eight exchanges against India. India failed to overcome Carlos Brathwaite’s men in their last four encounters and the Windies ended the home team’s campaign in the 2016 T20I World Cup, defeating them in the semi-final. India’s last win against West Indies came way back on March 23, 2014 in the WorldT20 in Bangladesh.
