It was a proud moment for the 18-year-old, Prithvi Shaw, as he became the 15th Indian batsman to score a Test century on debut. Also, Shaw went onto become the youngest Indian batsman to score a Test century on debut when he achieved the feat against the Windies in the opening Test of the two-match Test series played in Rajkot.
Shaw – 15th Indian to Hit a Ton on Test Debut
It was a special inning from a special talent. Prithvi never looked overawed by the prospect of Test cricket and treated the Windies bowlers with disdain on his debut. He reached his ton in less than 100 deliveries and made his presence felt.
Prithvi Shaw made everyone realise why he is already rated so highly in the domestic circuit. The right-handed batsman has an excellent record in first-class cricket, and it was a massive moment for him to replicate his form in the Test format.
The Mumbaikar looked in complete control of proceedings and played some exceptional shots in the process. What was heartening to see that all the shots were conventional shots and there was a sense of maturity as Shaw paced his innings to perfection.
However, Prithvi was part of the team India squad for the last two Tests in England. He got picked as a replacement for Murali Vijay who failed to make an impact in the first three Tests. However, Prithvi couldn’t quite make his debut in the series, as Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul got an extended run.
India on the front foot against Windies
Coming to the game, India lost the wicket of KL Rahul pretty early as Shanon Gabriel trapped him with an inswinging delivery which struck him plumb in front. However, from there on, it was a great partnership between Prithvi Shaw and Cheteshwar Pujara which got India back on track. Prithvi and Pujara both played some terrific shots, as the Windies failed to find any more wickets.
Shaw eventually reached a well-deserved century and jumped in the air with delight. It was a big moment for the 18-year-old who looked a class apart in his debut Test. Cheteshwar Pujara fell 14 short of yet another century.
