From Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya, a number of star Indian players are suffering from injuries in the ongoing season. Although the Indian National Cricket Team boasts about a star-studded line-up, it certainly misses the star players’ performance on the field.
This is widely evident from team India’s recent series loss to the Kiwis in the ODIs. The BlackCaps handed India their most shameful bilateral series defeat in 31 years whitewashing them 3-0. Individual performances hit to a new low during the series and the fans witnessed India’s downfall if the world’s best batsman and bowler do not perform in a series.
The Men in Blue have a busy calendar schedule when compared to other cricketing nations of the world. They just keep on playing games after games and are mostly devoid of a break. This has led to a lot of injuries in the senior national team owing to recent times.
Let’s have a look at the list of star Indian injured players and their expected return:
Injured Indian Players And Their Probable Comeback Date:
R0hit Sharma:
Rohit Sharma has been India’s busiest cricketer since 2019. He continued to play competitive cricket even as other players took rest. His first break since 2019 came in January 2020. But Rohit was back in action when India played Australia in three ODIs even when the series had no relevance.
Having played in the four out of the five T20 games in the T20 series in New Zealand, Rohit pulled off a calf injury in the final game of the series. This kept him away from the ODIs and he is set to miss the Tests too. His absence can be widely felt as India crumbled in the ODIs against the Kiwis.
Rohit will now be back in action when the Indian Premier League starts this year on March 29. He will lead Mumbai Indians (MI) in the first game of the season against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Bhuvneshwar Kumar:
India’s swing king and the death-overs specialist Bhuvneshwar Kumar has lost his spot in the team due to the injuries suffered in the past couple of years. Two years ago, he was India’s leading pacer across formats.
After making his comeback from a back issue, Bhuvneshwar was diagnosed with a sports hernia and recently underwent surgery for the same. He isn’t expected to be back for South Africa ODIs and might only make a comeback in IPL 2020.
Shikhar Dhawan:
The ‘Gabbar’ of the Men in Blue has been another prolific image for the team. Alongside Rohit, he has been one of India’s most consistent and busiest players. The opening duo has amassed a lot of runs for the team from 2013 until last year.
Dhawan had a forgettable 2019-20 season as he was injured thrice. At the 2019 World Cup, Dhawan suffered a fractured thumb while just before West Indies T20Is, he was ruled out of action due to a thigh injury.
Just a few days before flying to New Zealand, he suffered a shoulder injury during the third ODI against Australia and missed the complete tour. He is another Indian player who is expected to make a return in IPL 2020.
Hardik Pandya:
Hardik Pandya has been one of the most prolific all-rounders in recent time not only in India but in world cricket. His capability of batting destructively lower down the order and clinching crucial wickets for India in the middle of the innings is what the Men in Blue miss at the moment.
His powerful hitting helps the Indian team finish their innings on a high. Also, it helps the team to play with an extra bowler that gives them an edge over its opponents.
However, his troubled back was always an area of concern for the team management and he finally decided to go under the knife last year. Pandya is currently recovering from back surgery and has started training.
He made his comeback in India A squad for the New Zealand tour but was ruled out at the last moment as he failed the fitness test. Although he might be fit in time for the South Africa series, Pandya is expected to be given an extended break and might only make a comeback in IPL 2020.
Deepak Chahar:
Deepak Chahar, who had just made his ODI comeback, aggravated back issue during the West Indies series. He has been away from action since then and missed Australia and New Zealand series. He has an onerous task ahead and will have to compete with likes of Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini to get his place back.
Chahar is expected to make a comeback during IPL 2020.
