Contrary to the popular speculation, Chennai Super Kings did not go all out in the recently-concluded auction and adopted a very calm and cautious approach while building the squad for their comeback season. The two-time champions will be returning to the league along with Rajasthan Royals after serving a two-year suspension, but while the latter did everything possible to build a strong team, the Super Kings traded on a different line.

The much-anticipated auction for the upcoming Indian Premier League finally concluded on Sunday in Bangalore and not surprisingly it sprung a lot of surprises. While Jaydev Unadkat becoming the most expensive Indian player in this year’s auction should not come as a surprise considering his sensational performance last season, the likes of Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and many other notable names going unsold certainly left a lot of people surprised.

Now coming to the major figures of this year’s auction, out of 578 players, only 169 were sold. 113 of the sold players are Indians while the remaining 56 are overseas. Unadkat became the most expensive Indian player after being bought by Rajasthan Royals for a whopping amount of INR 11.5 crore Ben Stokes once again became the most expensive player after being bought by the same franchise for INR 12.5 crore.

Now that the auction is done and dusted we are taking a look at Super Kings’ squad.  One of the most successful teams in the history of the league, the Super Kings had retained MS Dhoni,  Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja and went on to buy top names like Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo, Harbhajan Singh and Shane Watson to bolster their squad.

They also secured the services of Ambati Rayudu, Imran Tahir and Kedar Jadhav as they will be keen to make their comeback season memorable.
