One of the most uncanny trends in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in last three years is the presence of leg-spinner Karn Sharma in IPL winning teams.
The wily leg-spinner was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2016 edition, while in 2017, he represented the Mumbai Indians (MI). This year, Karn continued this trend by being a part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
However, CSK captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, did not utilize his services in all matches as he preferred the likes of Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja, and Imran Tahir sporadically in the spin department.

“The format of IPL is such that even the best have to sometimes sit out because of team combinations. I wasn’t playing, but I also knew that IPL is the kind of platform where you are never out of contention unless you are injured. That said, playing the final is a special feeling,” Karn told Sportstar Live.
Karn added he is looking forward to having this luck in the foreseeable future while expressing his delight.
“Winning a tournament as a member of the squad and as part of the playing XI are completely different, it gives a different high. It was a dream and I am glad that I managed to live it, hopefully, it will continue both for me and for the teams,” added Sharma.
CSK coach Stephen Fleming often termed the change in home venues as a big jolt to their campaign, as during the auctions, they picked a lot of spinners in their squad.

“Also, our games shifting out affected the team compositions. I might have played a lot more games if we had had all our home games in Chennai. Because the team had also been selected keeping the conditions there in mind. Pune was a completely different pitch, conditions, everything,” said the 30-year old spinner.

“MS Dhoni is the coolest out there. All he cares about is that you give your 100 per cent on the ground. He told me that it was normal to be frustrated when you don’t get a chance to play. But (I) must grab whatever chances I get,” concluded Karn.
