The troublesome knee can see Mitchell Santner missing his first IPL stint as the all-rounder might sit out for a period of six to nine months.
This clearly means that he will just not miss IPL, but also the county season for Derbyshire.
Santner hasn’t been named in the Test squad for the series against England and is in doubt for IPL as well.
Chennai Super Kings bought the Kiwi all-rounder at his base price of Rs 50 Lakh.
Santner was keen to play for CSK but an injury looks all set to rule him out.
The Chennai based franchise will have to look for a replacement for the all-rounder, who will join likes of Harbhajan Singh and Karn Sharma in the spin department.
An official confirmation is yet to be made whether Santner will miss the tournament or not.
However, the lengthy period for which he will have to sit out clearly indicates that he will not land in India to play IPL.
This was the first time when Santer got a buyer the IPL auction, after going unsold in the previous year’s auction.
He has done well for New Zealand in past couple of months, which saw Chennai Super Kings bidding for him.
His spin was the best suited for the side on a slow track of Chennai.
Also, his batting abilities could have been a bonus for the franchise.
Now, it (franchise) will look for a player with same abilities.
Chennai Super Kings open their IPL tourney against Mumbai Indians on April 7, the opening day of IPL.
The franchise is making a comeback to the T20 league after serving a ban of two years.
It retained likes of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja ahead of the IPL auction.
MS Dhoni will continue to lead the team, which also has Murali Vijay, who has played for the side.
Stephen Fleming will continue to perform the role of Head coach with likes of Michael Hussey (batting coach) and Laxmipathy Balaji (bowling coach) in the coaching staff.
